East Fishkill seeks to win national search to become home to Amazon warehouse

Dutchess County says it is the frontrunner in a national search to be home to an Amazon warehouse.

The warehouse would take the place of IBM's former location in East Fishkill - a $135 million investment.

Some nearby residents say they're in favor of the plan since it would bring jobs to the area.

Sarah Lee, of Think Dutchess, says if Amazon chooses this site, it would bring in 500 jobs.

"This is really a center where they're going to be receiving authorized Amazon vendors, and then Amazon repackages them and then sends them off to the fulfillment centers," said Lee.

In order for those jobs to come to Dutchess, there will be some incentives for Amazon to relocate to the county over other locations.

Lee says they are ironing out the details for a payment in lieu of taxes, as well as a sales tax and mortgage tax exemption.

"It's a long process. There are a lot of hurdles to overcome, but we're working hard and hopefully we can do it," said Nick D'Alessandro, East Fishkill supervisor.

A traffic study is on the list of things to be done, according to D'Alessandro.

Amazon released a statement saying, "Amazon is a dynamic business and we are constantly exploring new locations. We weigh a variety of factors when deciding where to develop future sites to best serve customers, however, we have a policy of not commenting on our future roadmap."
